It’s that time of year again. Time for strawberries and Roddas, Pimms (ice and a slice), and a collective holding of the breath while Andy Murray takes to Centre Court at Wimbledon. Funnily enough, tennis CAN actually be played and enjoyed in the other 50 weeks of the year, as I found out when I caught up with Craig from Whirlwind Sports on Lemon Quay.
Whirlwind Sports has been around for 30 years, has 5 stores in Cornwall including Truro, and is an active sponsor of the Whirlwind Sports Mini Tour which promotes tennis to our youngsters. Craig showed me a selection of the rackets available and it’s a far cry from my old wooden school racket with its wooden press. All very retro, I hear you say, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the high-tech offerings on the shelves today.
If you’re a backcourt player, you’ll prefer a racket with a larger head, if your game involves lots of topspin, then go for the smaller heavier head. Smaller head??!! I need one the size of the deuce court to stand a chance these days! Whatever your game is, there’s a racket to suit and Craig or one of his team would be only too happy to help you decide.
You can even choose one with your favourite player on it, Andy, Novak, or Rafa. I’m not sure if they’ve personally blessed the rackets, but I’m sure a bit of their genius will inspire you.
Get dressed to impress
We all know that half the battle is looking the part. Whether it’s a job interview or a big occasion, it’s nice to look as if you’ve made an effort and I don’t think tennis is any different.
Admittedly I’ve sometimes seen Andy Murray play in what can only be described as ‘municipal park chic‘. C’mon Andy, we love you – but look at every mother’s favourite, Roger Federer with his lovely blazer and matching white socks. Roger sparkles with as much Daz brilliance as is humanly possible and almost sends the BBC cameras into white-balance meltdown.
So put your best foot forward and look the part with these snazzy Wimbledon White suggestions from the Whirlwind site.
You’re ready for tennis action
Now you’re all fired up with the right racket and super sporty clothes and footwear, why not check in at the Truro Lawn Tennis Club and try out your new gear. You never know – you might be the next Andy, Rafa. Novak or (if you manage to keep your whites whiter than…) Roger.
Good Luck – and C’mon Andy!
