You may remember that a few months ago, Jac and I were fortunate enough to visit Spiezia and spend time with MD Amanda Barlow. You can refresh your memories here, but one of the things that struck Jac and I on our visit is the absolute passion with which Amanda runs her business.
Amanda’s energy is infectious and her vision inspirational. Alongside her business she has set up the charity Made for Life, which helps & supports ladies undergoing treatment for cancer. I was fortunate enough to be invited on a Made for Life session at the Falmouth Hotel.
After a warm welcome from event manager, Juliette and a nice cup of coffee I got chatting to some of the ladies who had come along for the day. They were looking forward to spending time together, sharing their experiences as well as an inspirational talk from Jamie Edwards, lunch and then an afternoon of pampering courtesy of Emma, the resident Spiezia therapist.
A little more conversation from Jamie
First up was Jamie Edwards, who started his business the ‘Trained Brain‘ in 2000. Jamie has helped numerous sports stars such as Freddy Flintoff, Joe Hart and Lewis Moody either re-discover their form or achieve their goals. As well as sports people, Jamie has experience in business and life coaching. He delivered a dynamic session which encouraged us all to look at how we deal with life, giving us some useful tools and tips along the way and encouraging us to have meaningful conversations instead of just chats.
“Made for Life has been so helpful”
Afterwards, I chatted with a couple of the ladies and asked them what ‘Made for Life’ has meant to them. Diane told me ‘Its the only group in Cornwall that I’ve found that can bring people together – its been really helpful for me“, Mary explained “I’ve only recently come across Made for Life and I’ve really appreciated the sociability. We’ve all got similar experiences and its nice to be able to talk to someone that had gone through treatment ”
Treatments are most definitely allowed
One of the downsides of having chemotherapy or any sort of cancer treatment is the reluctance of many Spa’s to offer massages or facials to ladies. I spoke to several this week who, once they have filled in their forms on a Spa day, have been refused treatments. Therefore, what should be a real treat can turn into a disappointing day out. Fortunately, Spiezia has a solution to this.
Beauty Therapist Emma was getting ready to pamper some of the ladies after lunch when I got a chance to chat with her. Emma said “Spiezia offers a ‘head in heaven‘ treatment which has been specially designed for people who are having all sorts of cancer treatment so that they get a chance to relax and enjoy a bit of pampering. We’ve done quite a few recently as it’s Cancer awareness month.” Emma is based at the Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre near Treliske and anyone can book up for a Spiezia treatment by calling 01326 221777
Juliette organises other workshops’ including art, mindfulness, visualisations and the all important afternoon tea! What impressed me most was the way that Made for Life not only gives these lovely ladies tools to deal with their situation, but it also provides a safe place where they can meet others, chat through their various treatments, find friendship and support.
Our original post was called ‘Super Spiezia’ – and calling this one ‘Marvellous Made for Life’ seemed absolutely appropriate. Well done Juliette, Amanda, Emma and all of the team, you are all amazing!
Thanks also to Tiffany Bailey from The Falmouth Hotel for your hospitality.
